I am making a snowman one way or another!

Here in Greenville, SC we are anxiously watching the weather over the next several hours.   Meteorologists are now calling for about a 100% chance of snow in the Upstate of SC.    This entertainer has mixed feelings about it.  First of all, I am a kid at heart.  I love snow almost as much as my kids do.  And if we get the four to six inches that is called for, I will build a snowman.  I will have a snowball fight and enjoy drinking some hot chocolate. 

 But secondly (and in reality the most important aspect) I am a parent.  My kids may enjoy one or two days out of school now, but later on they will lose some of their extra holidays from school.  When I was in Elementary School I never understood having a “snow day” in April.   Then there is also the lost revenue.  I do not have any birthday parties until the weekend (and hopefully the snow will have melted), but I am scheduled to some balloon twisting at Corona’s Mexican Restaurant on Monday night.  And Joy Set Entertainment will be doing balloon twisting and face painting at the Greenville Road Warriors hockey games on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights this week.  And while I hardly consider what I do to be actual working, since I get paid to play,

The kid part of me is slowly winning out.  I am actually hoping for a good couple of hours of playing in the snow followed by some “global warming” … err … uh … climate change to clear the roads.  Regardless of what happens, I plan on having fun.

I dress up ALL the time.

Hey if you haven’t read this before, its new to you …. I have a confession to make.  Halloween is my least favorite holiday.  There I said it, its now out in the open.  But my reasons for disliking Halloween might surprise you.

First of all, it is not because I consider Halloween something sinister.  A brief check into an encyclopedia or even wikipedia will confirm the eerie origins of All Hallow’s Eve.  However I prefer to believe that God is in control all 365 days of the year.  Frankly I am not going to give even one day to the devil.

Halloween is about ready to beat out Christmas for over commercialization.  Just this morning I saw gingerbread HAUNTED houses on display.  I freaked out when the perennial Easter favorite of Peeps started making Peep ghosts, but haunted houses made of gingerbread?  How do they know its haunted I wonder?

Plus Halloween makes me feel like Rodney Dangerfield, I just don’t get no respect.  As a family friendly Greenville, SC entertainer I dress up year round.  Sometimes I dress as a jester for a birthday party, sometimes I am the Tie Dye Balloon Guy for a library show, and sometimes I am a clown for a fall festival.  You may even find me dressed up as a banana at a Greenville bank for a singing telegram.  But around Halloween, dressing up is suddenly normal.  I guess that is my main problem, I don’t like being normal.

Is your event guaranteed?

Joy Set Entertainment has been extra busy lately. Normally this is a good thing. However the reason for some of our business increase is not so good. Let me explain.   Over the past three weeks Joy Set Entertainment has had an increase in short notice requests. “Can you twist balloons at our birthday party in Greenville tomorrow?”"Would you be able to make it to Spartanburg for our festival to paint faces this weekend?”

“Do you have any magicians available next week in the Anderson area?”

Or my favorite, “My daughter’s birthday party is in two hours, can you send someone?”

These requests came from parents and event planners that had had their entertainers cancel on them. And sometimes the entertainer provided very little notice. I realize that emergencies can happen, and mistakes can be made even by an entertainer. I also know that this is a very busy time for festivals, school carnivals, church events, and more. Let me just be blunt. Sometimes these other entertainers will cancel with a smaller event to be able to do a larger, more profitable event.  That means that unfortunately there are some other clowns in the area that will cancel a birthday party to go perform at a company picnic.  And there are other magicians in the area that will make an excuse as to why they can’t make a performance in Greenville, SC only to show up for something different in Atlanta, GA. 

If I sound bitter about this, it is because I am bitter.  It is not fair to cancel a booking just to take another one that is perceived as better.  This is not how Joy Set Entertainment operates our business.  It never has been, and it never will be.  One of Joy Set Entertainment’s guarantees is The Show Must Go On.  This means that when you book an event with Joy Set Entertainment, it is booked.  We will not cancel with you.  Joy Set networks with several qualified entertainers in Anderson, Greenville, Laurens, Easley, and Spartanburg to ensure that we not only can cover events, but that we can also offer backup entertainers for events as well.  However as of late, we have had to trim our list of entertainers that we call upon or recommend (see above).

If you are planning an event large or small, ask your entertainer how they plan to guarantee your event.  Will they send you a contract?  And please do your part and don’t cancel on your entertainer at the last minute.  This is how we make our living.  And many times we do turn down other events to make certain that your special event has quality entertainers.  And to my fellow performers out there.  Please honor your word and be people of integrity.  You hurt the entertainment business when you mistreat customers by canceling bookings.  Eventually this practice will come back to hurt you.
